Printemps

Hitting the slopes

In 1912, when skiing had just gained recognition as an official sport in France, Printemps was already carrying all the winter sports essentials: skis, snowshoes, ice skates and, of course, warm clothes.

By the end of the 1920s, the sport had become more popular and major fashion houses like Jean Patou, Elsa Schiaparelli and Hermès started to take an interest in this emerging trend. Since then, winter collections have only grown larger and more popular. Printemps even began publishing full catalogues devoted to winterwear every year!

In the 1960s, skiing opened up to the masses. And in 1964, four years before the Grenoble Olympics, Printemps offered Parisians the first artificial ski slope in the middle of the city for several seasons, turning its panoramic terrace sitting at a height of 50 meters into a mini Chamonix-sur-Seine.

A few years later, Rue Caumartin hosted a ski jump in front of the current Citadium. The French ski industry had surely reached its summit!
